In the Wild with Greg Wagner

While our kids fished nearby spring-fed ponds for bass and bluegill in Antelope County on our recent summer vacation to northeastern Nebraska, my wife Polly and I grabbed our river sandals, fishing gear and took to the East Branch of the Verdigre Creek in search of rainbow and brown trout.

Polly sneaks the creek for trout.

We passionately enjoy wade-fishing that clear, cold, pristine, blue-ribbon trout stream.

Look at that water clarity! This creek should always be protected!

We don’t keep anything caught. We practice catch-photo- and-release (Daryl Bauer in our Game and Parks Fisheries Division would be proud). Hope you enjoy all of the pics of the creek  that we refer to as “the Verdigre.”

My wife Polly absolutely loves to wade in her sandals and trout fish in "the Verdigre."

Whoa honey, hang on to that fish!

I also like to wade-fish and work the creek for rainbow and brown trout.

I think trout such as this rainbow are such beautiful fish!

The East Branch of the Verdigre Creek flowing through the Grove Lake Wildlife Management Area near Royal is a true gem. Fish it sometime! It doesn’t take fancy equipment. You’ll catch some trout. But, more so, you’ll experience a spectacular natural resource and wanna come back again and again! Polly and I expect to see you out there – literally in “the Verdigre!”

Prized brown trout are very pretty, too!
