COWBOY TRAIL FLOODING UPDATE by Greg Wagner

This information just in from Duane Westerholt who manages trails in our parks division. Thanks for providing the information as well as the photos, Duane!

The Cowboy Recreation and Nature Trail from Norfolk to O’Neill is officially closed to all use due to extensive flooding and the loss of the major iron bridge just west of Norfolk across the Elkhorn River.

It is advised at this time that everyone stay clear of this bridge area and off all bridges between these two communities until it can be assessed that they are safe.

Some trail sections have been completely washed away and are impassible at this time.

We have received numerous calls requesting a status report on the trail condition from people wanting to ride the trail this weekend. At this time the only section closed is the 72-mile section from Norfolk to O’Neill. There are some rough spots west of O’Neill, but they should be still passable on to Valentine. We will be looking at all the bridges between this stretch to make sure they are safe for travel.

If further information is requested you can contact me.

Thank You,

Duane Westerholt

See you out there, only in areas where it is safe to travel!
