NIOBRARA RIVER POLAR BEAR DIP AND FESTIVAL by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

Get ready to dig out your swimsuit, grab lots of towels (and blankets), make sure your digital camera is working and prepare to head to north-central Nebraska on the last weekend of this month for some good old-fashioned Sandhills fun! Why? What for? Well, for the 2010 Niobrara River Polar Bear Dip and Festival that will be taking place at Meadville, NE which is located about 15 miles north of Ainsworth. Meadville has the nicest folks you’ll ever meet, a cool, nostalgic general store, a scenic private park and a neat bridge over the Niobrara River.

Now c’mon, I know what you’re thinking – this guy’s nuts for even mentioning this event. You’ve got to be crazy to wanna plunge into the icy waters of the Niobrara River, right? Maybe somewhat. This event, in my opinion, makes for a fun road trip, the perfect cure for cabin fever (though it is not for the faint of heart) and the fodder for future outdoor stories.

In addition to the popular Polar Bear Dip scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 30 with registration for it beginning at Noon that day at the General Store, there are other activities happening throughout the weekend of January 29-31 to enjoy there as well. A dance, snowmobile & ATV races, sleigh rides, chainsaw competition, bonfires and a tug-of-war are all on the slate.

Get more information about the Niobrara River Polar Bear Dip and Festival by calling the good folks at the Meadville General Store, at: (402) 497-2440. You can also e-mail the Ainsworth Chamber of Commerce for info, at: ainsworthchamber@yahoo.com

Remember, I’ll see you out there and I’ll be right behind you all the way going into the frigid waters of the Niobrara, holding your towels that is, ha! The photos used here are from this online photostream: Barney’s Blue / Carolyn on flickr via Yahoo.
